How to Get Ahead with an Internship

It's common knowledge that an internship in a specific field can really boost your chance at procuring a post-graduation position in your chosen field. In many cases, interns are fortunate enough to receive a job offer after graduation from a company that they interned with during their undergrad days.

There's lots of helpful advice in this video, and TA member Kerry Cotter's "real world" article on making the most of your internship.

Heather Huhman interviews Dr. Joanne Sujanksy and Dr. Jan Ferri-Reed, authors of “Keeping the Millennials: Why Companies are Losing Billions in Turnover to This Generation, and What to Do About It." The authors share advice on turning an internship into a full-time job.

Read the first installment of our new internship series here, as TA member Derek Wesson discusses his internship at WMUR=TV in Manchester, NH.

While internships can provide invaluable experience to recent graduates, there are times when the unpaid internship model is abused. http://j.mp/chSO8Z

Thanks for the post Joe. As someone who has mentored and helped to move along the careers of many young journalists, your comments are greatly appreciated.

As a consultant for recruiting with The Wall Street Journal, I can't over-emphasize the importance of internships for those seeking a career in journalism. Most of the recruiters I know in print or broadcast media are not really concerned about a candidate's GPA or, to some extent, the awards they make have won. While a high GPA and awards are commendable, what we value most are samples of your work, either your print clips or, in the case of television, a tape.
Paid internships are always better than unpaid. And those internships that give practial experience in the field are preferable to those in which the intern is merely a go-fer, answering the phone, fetching coffee, etc. The Wall Street Journal reporting internship pays $700 per week for 10 weeks in summer and the candidate is treated as if he or she is a WSJ reporter. Performing well in an internship may result in a full-time staff position at many media companies.

A coop assignment or an internship can (should) be viewed as an extended (3 month, 6 month, 1 year, 2 year) job interview. A coop or an intern is constantly learning and acquiring experience... but also evaluating the organization and asking the question "Do I want to work here?" Simultaneously, the organization is learning from the coop or intern, getting some useful work accomplished, and asking the question "Do we want this intern to be part of our team... permanently?"

In selecting an internship students should ascertain whether or not the company is serious about hiring its interns for permanent positions.

I would also highly recommend that students who seek internships with companies seek out companies in which they would really like to make a permanent home.

One factor I've always considered in hiring interns is what will the organization and I learn from the intern as well as what will the intern learn from us. The learning is absolutely a 2 way street. The intern, for example, may be more up to date on some new techniques/technologies just being taught in school than people who have been in the workforce for years.

There's a new video that addresses some great advice directly from employers regarding what they are looking for in an intern.
