Who We Are
From London, England in 1844 to Indianapolis, Indiana in 1854, the
YMCA maintains a rich tradition of building strong kids, strong
families, and strong communities.
Throughout Indianapolis, our 12 YMCA
branches serve more than 185,000 people from diverse communities –
providing over $7 million in scholarships, program subsidies, and
underwritten programs in low-income communities. We want to do more
than serve people in our community—we want to help them thrive.
Our Mission
To put Christian principles into practice through programs that
enhance personal growth and improve health of spirit, mind, and
body for all.
Our Values
Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility.
YMCAs give young people a safe place
to call their own. Caring, dedicated adults are there to listen to
them and help them navigate the stresses, changes and choices that
come with adolescence. Building relationships with these
responsible adults and with other young people from different
backgrounds helps give preteens and teens the inner strength to
avoid destructive behavior. Young people have more fun and learn
more when they can take the lead in planning and directing their
own programs, and Ys often provide this opportunity.
The YMCA has many programs for teens,
which include:
Youth and
Government
The purpose of the program is to bring the workings of state
government alive to students. It creates an opportunity for
students to discuss current state issues with state administrators,
elected officials, and students from high schools and YMCA's
throughout the state.
Each conference is led by teens
elected to office by their fellow delegates. Each state provides
facilities and volunteers from various state departments who act as
resources for the students while they debate the issues. The
volunteers help guide the students through mock committee meetings.
Students debate and vote on the bills that their fellow delegates
have written and presented. Bills that pass in committee are then
taken to the floor of the House or Senate for full debate and
vote.
